The Bachelor of Technology (BUT) is a three-year university program offered at University Institutes of Technology (IUTs). It allows you to earn a three-year degree in one of the many specializations available.
What is the GOAL?
The BUT program focuses primarily ondeveloping technical and professional skills, in close collaboration with the business community.
This three-year program was launched in 2021 and replaced the two-year University Diploma in Technology (DUT).
The program is structured over six semesters, leading to the award of 180 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System), equivalent to a bachelor’s degree, which ensures the degree’s recognition across Europe and enables students to pursue further studies.
Who can enroll in a BUT program, and how do you do it?
The BUT program is open to anyone who holds a General or Technology Baccalaureate.
EUT also offers a specific program that is unique in France, theENEP, which allows vocational high school graduates to enroll in a BUT program (only four majors are available in this case).
Enrollment in the BUT program is handled exclusively through Parcoursup, which is generally open from mid-January to mid-March. Responses are usually provided by the end of May.
What fields of study are offered in the BUT program?
The two IUTs in Grenoble, along with those in Valence and Vienne, offer 15 different BUT programs covering a wide range of fields of expertise, which you can view on our Expertise Page.
You can also explore the various BUT programs offered on theIUT1 and IUT2 from Grenoble or from theValence University Institute of Technology.
How is instruction conducted in the BUT program?
The BUT program alternates between lectures (theoretical), the Tutorials (TD) and the Practical Work (TP), the Learning and Assessment Situation (SAé, similar to very long practical exercises), the mentored projects and the internships.
Classes are taught by by academics and business professionals.
It is possible to create the Work-Study Program, that is, by taking classes at the IUT while working at a company (and receiving a salary). This is available starting in the 2ndissue or 3issue third year of the BUT program, depending on the major chosen.
Finally, you'll also be able to track part of your GOAL abroad.
What should you do after earning a bachelor's degree?
The BUT program offers both theoretical and practical training. At the end of your three years of study, you will have the option toenter the workforce or continue your studies. Upon completing a bachelor's degree, nearly as many students decide to enter the workforce as those who choose to continue their studies.
The BUT program leads to a three-year degree recognized within the LMD system (Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctorate). Upon entering the workforce, you will be qualified for positions such as senior technician or supervisor, or even mid-level professional or managerial roles.
If you continue your studies and hold a degree recognized by the state (and at the European level), you will be eligible for Masters, of engineering schools and to special education schools.
